Salem To Host Electronic Waste Recycling Day

SALEM, MA — Salem will hold its first electronic recycling event of the year on March 27 at Salem State University's O'Keefe parking lot.

The site was moved from Salem High School because of the drive-thru "Stop the Spread" coronavirus testing taking place there.

This will be the first of four planned e-waste recycling days for residents in the city in 2021 with additional days scheduled for June 26, Sept. 25 and Dec. 18.

Any "plug-in" item is eligible for recycling with most free. The exceptions are TVs, monitors, freon appliances and exercise equipment — which can be recycled with a $20 fee.

Because of coronavirus protocols, drop-off will be contactless and items should be put in trunks, truck beds and hatchbacks. Items cannot be put in back seats. Those dropping off items must wear a face covering and have cash or a check payable to RMG Enterprise ready.

Washers, dryers, stoves and commercial items cannot be accepted. Waste Management will pick those up via appointment by calling 800-972-4545.

Items containing mercury and CFL bulbs can be recycled through the Department of Public Services on Jefferson Avenue during business hours. Drop off should be scheduled through Micaela Guglielmi at mguglielmi@salem.com or 978-619-5672.
