The organization started at the beginning of the year, with all volunteers and is currently working on becoming a 501(c)(3).
SHENANDOAH VALLEY, Va. (WHSV) — On Thursday, Sonoco Recycling announced they will no longer recycle plastics or glass. Sonoco Recycling services Augusta County, Staunton and Waynesboro.
The recycling processor said this is due in part to the cost of recycling plastic increasing.
Shenandoah Green, an environmental organization in the Valley, said they knew an end to plastic recycling was coming but they didn't expect it to happen so soon.
The organization said rather then looking back now is the time to move forward and look into alternatives for recycling.
"Recycling plastic will probably end soon altogether in the valley," Georgi Tomisato, organizer of Shenandoah Green, said. "I don't think recycling is a very good option, it is sort of a band aid that's falling off, so what we're looking at now is actually reducing and refusing plastic."
On Tuesday, the organization will be holding an Earth Action Day meeting at 5:30 p.m. at the Staunton Library.
Tomisato said at the meeting they will be discussing more on what citizens can do to reduce their plastic use.
