Clarendon Hills residents will pay 70 cents a month more for trash/recycling pickup for one year, starting July 1, based on an 18-month extension to an existing contract the village has with Republic Services.
The Village Board approved the contract extension Monday after also considering a five-year extension to 2014 contract.
The usual day for trash/recycling pickup will continue to be Tuesday, except when it is a holiday.
The 70-cents increase will appear on bills as a line item for a recycling processing fee from Republic Services.
On July 1, 2020, the fee will either increase to 98 cents monthly or decrease to 42 cents monthly, depending on the recycling market. That is based on recycle sales, minus processing rate, minus residual costs.
“We decided on the 18-month extension instead of taking five years because we’re hoping recycling costs stabilize, and the five-year extension would have required us to commit to a higher rate,” Village Manager Kevin Barr said.
The negotiated contract extension keeps the rates for actual curbside collection/carryout monthly charges to remain $21.98 and $33.07, respectively, through all 18 months. Carryout containers are picked up by hand from outside a resident’s back door.
The price of yard waste stickers will increase to $2.75 from $2.55 during the duration of the contract extension.
“We’ll have to negotiate again sooner this way than if we had gone with the five-year extension, but staff and the board felt this was the best way to handle it for our residents,” Barr said.
Village President Len Austin said the staff and board discussed going out for bid for garbage/recycling pickup, but opted not to because the community has been pleased with Republic Services, which has been handling garbage/recycling pickup in Clarendon Hills for as long as anyone can remember.
“We’d also have to go through everyone having to get new trash and recycling containers if we changed companies,” Barr said.
Village policy state that garbage and recyclables should be placed at the curb for pickup by 6 a.m. on the day of pickup and no earlier than 30 minutes prior to sunset the evening before. All containers are to be removed from the curb by 8 p.m. the day of pickup.
