Prospect Heights and the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) will host a Document Destruction and Electronics Recycling Event at the Prospect Heights Metra Station, 101 S. Wolf Rd., from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 8.
Materials will not be accepted from non-SWANCC residents, businesses, schools, or institutions, and IDs will be checked for verification of residency.
Workers will remove the paper documents while residents stay in their vehicles. Paper is cross-shredded on site and will be recycled at a mill to make new paper products. Only sensitive documents are accepted, that can include medical forms, bank statements, personal files and retired tax forms. There is a limit of six file boxes or paper bags per vehicle, and plastic and metal clips or binders must be removed.
Do not bring paper in plastic bags. Plastic is a contaminant, as are photos, slides, and any non-paper item. Do not include magazines, greeting cards or newspapers, as these can be recycled curbside.
Remove electronics from plastic packaging and boxes prior to bringing to a SWANCC event. There is a limit of seven electric items per household, not including cords and keyboards.
Acceptable materials include cable receivers, cell phones, computer cables, computer monitors, computers (desktop, notebook, tablet), converter boxes, desktop fax machines and printers, keyboards, mice, MP3 Players, Portable Digital Assistants (PDAs), satellite receivers, scanners, televisions, video game consoles, video recorders/players and zip drives.
Items not accepted include stereos, speakers, batteries or battery back-ups, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, humidifiers, home appliances, lamps, microwaves, vacuum cleaners, refrigerators or other large home appliances; and CDs, DVDs or VHS tapes.
