Changes coming to Manistee County recycling program

MANISTEE COUNTY — Residents of Bear Lake will be included in the Manistee County PA69 recycling program beginning Jan. 1, joining current participants Arcadia, Brown, Cleon, Dickson, Maple Grove, Marilla, Onekama and Springdale townships.

The existing recycling site located at Bear Lake Township Hall will close temporarily until a new recycling site is established, according to a news release from Sarah Archer, Manistee County recycling coordinator. The Springdale Township recycling site will close permanently effective Jan. 1.

Residents of participating townships in the Manistee County PA69 Recycling Program can recycle at any of the following locations during daylight hours:

• Arcadia Township Hall

• Brown Township Hall

• Cleon Township – on Brown Street off Cleon Road

• Dickson Township – behind the fire hall off Wingert  Street in Brethren

• Maple Grove Township – at Bay Area Recycling for Charities, 11407 Industrial Drive, Kaleva

• Onekama Township Hall

GFL Environmental becomes the new service provider for the recycling sites beginning the first of the year. New recycling bins will be placed at the sites prior to Jan. 1 to ensure the sites will have bins available during the transition of service providers.

Residents and businesses are reminded and encouraged to continue to recycle cardboard in the Packaging Corporation of America school fundraising trailers at the following locations:

• Bay Area Recycling for Charities in Kaleva;

• Betsie Valley School off M-115 in Thompsonville;

• Old Brethren High School off Coates Highway in Brethren;

• Manistee Catholic Central;

• Onekama Township Hall; and

• Wellston Transfer Station.

Here are a few tips for recycling right during the holiday season:

• Recycle wrapping paper and greeting cards, except foil paper, cards with glitter or sound devices;

• Ribbons and bows are not recyclable. Save and reuse them;

• Remove plastic zip ties, twist ties, clear plastic “windows” used to bind and display toys and gifts. These are not recyclable — dispose of them with trash;

• Empty and flatten boxes before recycling to save space in the bins and fundraising trailers; and

• No plastic bags and keep recycleables loose.
