MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Many residents are feeling the effects of the fire at a recycling plant. The fire happened last Friday. Officials say a pile of cardboard that ignited is to blame. Madeleine Edwards of Get Green Recycling runs a recycling pick-up service for those who live outside the city of Memphis.
“Well we’re kind of scrambling to figure out what to do. Should we hold the recycling,” Edwards said. Edwards says this facility is the only place in the region that accepts glass. “A lot of my clients are restaurants and I pick up a lot of bottles, so I’ll have to figure out what to do with those,” she said. Memphis and Southaven residents are in limbo as well.
A City of Memphis spokesperson said that while the facility is out of commission this week, Solid Waste Management will be emptying recycling bins into garbage trucks and sending it to the landfill. “Even if it goes to the landfill, I tell people keep recycling because hopefully things will be back up and running and you don’t want to get out of the habit,” Edwards said.
Southaven residents could have a solution soon. “The recycling team has been driving forward on the repairs and clean-up of the recycling facility as safely and as fast as humanly possible. Currently, schedule pending, we are pushing to be open Thursday, June 6th," the city said in a Facebook post.
The City of Memphis spokeswoman says they have not been given any timeline for when curbside recycling will resume, but they encourage those who want their items recycled to drop it off at one of three drop-off locations.
