Recycling program resumes in Lawrence, Scioto counties

LAWRENCE COUNTY, OH - Residents in Lawrence and Scioto County are getting their recycling program back.

According to Lawrence Scioto Waste District Director Dan Palmer, the recycling program came to a halt back in October of last year because Republic was unable to fulfill the terms of the contract.

Wednesday marked the first day the program came back.

Palmer tells 13 News he’s already been receiving phone calls from residents complaining that the bins are already filled up at several locations.

He’s asking residents for their patience as he says people have probably been saving up their recyclable items in their homes.

Our very own photojournalist Chris Holtzapfel says that’s exactly what he’s been doing since the program originally came to a halt.

Lawrence County resident Verlin Woten says he’s glad he can drop off his recycling at several locations again.

“Oh, I’m tickled to death with it,” said Wooten. It saves on the landfills and if you can reproduce what you’ve already produced, you’re far ahead.”

Director Palmer says on average, Lawrence and Scioto counties recycle about 180 tons per month.
