Plastic Film Recycling Challenge Set to Begin in Otsego County Schools


SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Otsego County Schools Plastic Film Recycling Challenge will commence on 15th November, the America Recycles Day. The challenge focuses on collecting clean, dry, plastic film, so as to keep them out of the landfill. The challenge is open to all public and private k-12 school districts/schools located in Otsego County.

The challenge will run from November 15, 2022 until April 15, 2023.The registered schools can begin collecting film on November 15th. The winners will be announced in April 2023.  The students are required to collect plastic items such as single-use grocery bags, Ziploc-style food bags, wood pellet bags and other items and bring them to school, where they will be weighted. After submitting the weight details to the Oneida County Conservation Association (OCCA) every week, the collected plastics will be transported to participating recycler for proper recycling.

Jeff O’Handley , Program director, OCCA noted that schools and their communities have collected over 10,000 pounds of film plastic for recycling over the past three years. The Challenge aims to promote and educate youth and the community about proper recycling of plastic bags and other plastic film items, he added.
