SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Redwood Materials has reached an agreement with Panasonic to boost use of recycled cathode active materials in battery cells at proposed Kansas plant, whose construction is already underway. The production from the plant is expected to commence by March 2025. The facility will directly use cathode material from recycled feedstock.
Starting 2024, Panasonic will make use of recycled copper foil for cell production at its Gigafactory 1 in Nevada. The plant, along with Kansas plant, will produce round cells, whose cell chemistry might differ slightly.

It must be noted that the two companies had started their partnership in 2019. Since then, Redwood has been recycling waste from Nevada factory. Earlier this year, both the companies had decided to use more volume of recycled materials from Redwood plants in Panasonic battery cells.
Kazuo Tadanobu, president and CEO of Panasonic Energy noted that the partnership with Redwood has helped it to use recycled materials in its high-quality automotive batteries, thereby contributing to the circular economy. Furthermore, it will contribute to company’s efforts to reduce carbon footprint, he added.
