Household waste recycling centre reopens after refurbishment

A household waste recycling centre reopened today following an extensive refurbishment.

Staffordshire County Council has spent £50,000 improving and upgrading Burntwood HWRC.

Work has included resurfacing the site, painting fresh lines and repairs to make the popular site easier to use.

Simon Tagg, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Infrastructure and Climate Change, said:

"Household waste Recycling Centres have an important part to play in our drive to reduce the county’s carbon footprint to net zero by 2050.

Burntwood already accepts 36 different types of household waste and improving its facilities, so it can change and adapt to different needs in future, is part of our commitment to developing the service.”

The investment follows the return of the authority’s 14 Household Waste Recycling Centres to Staffordshire County Council management in April 2022, with the promise of upgraded facilities and more sophisticated recycling methods.

Simon Tagg added:

"When we brought the service back in-house, we promised we would invest to make the sites better for residents and more flexible for the future and Burntwood is the first to benefit.”

Residents recycle almost 2,000 tonnes of waste annually at Burntwood HWRC, with materials including garden waste, wood and timber, batteries, electronic and electrical equipment, textiles and furniture.

Staffordshire’s 14 HWRCS accept 80,000 tonnes of waste each year. Thanks to them and the work of the county council’s waste-to-energy plant, only one per cent of waste goes to landfill.
