St. Johns recycling center needs more staff to operate

ST. JOHNS, MI (WILX) - Residents of St. Johns reached out to complain when they found out their recycling pickup is going to be changed to a bi-weekly schedule, but that could be the least of their problems in a couple of months.

"We will possibly close if we can't get donations by the end of November," Roger Dershem, of the St. Johns Recycling Center said.

Dershem runs the St. Johns Recycling Center. He said the one paid employee he has right now isn't enough.

"We need to get volunteers to come down and help," Dershem said.

Dershem and the volunteers that come in have to go through the items that some people just dump in their bin, which slows down the process.

"People put junk in this and this is what really hurts us," Dershem said.

Dershem offered one solution that could help.

"If we could get like our court systems to work with us and get people to do community service here - that would help us tremendously," Dershem said.

As for the change in pickup times, News 10 spoke with a local business owner who said she is a little nervous for the change.

"I am always emptying my recycling like I can't imagine if I have to be going every two weeks, I'll be storing in bags I guess," Connie Trimbach, a St. Johns Business Owner said.

The bi-weekly recycling pickup will start up in December.

The St. Johns Lion Club has set a goal to raise $10,000 from everyone who uses their facility.
