SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Houston Independent School District (HISD) has announced launch of a recycling program at as many as 20 participating schools across the city, in partnership with leading businesses including ExxonMobil and Cyclyx. The program is scheduled to commence in April this year.

The program aims to collect a wide range of materials including cardboard, paper and a variety of hard-to-recycle plastics from chip bags to takeout containers, which generally doesn’t fall under recycling collection. The HISD aims to boost recycling rates from 10% to 90%. The key focus will be to prevent hard-to-recycle plastic from being dumped to landfill or thrown to the environment, by providing an opportunity to safely recycle them.
Rhonda Schwer, Principal at Lantrip Elementary school-one of the 20 participating schools and facilities in HISD’s recycling program, noted that the program will help students learn how to build a more sustainable Houston.
It must be noted that the Lantrip Elementary school is renowned for a curriculum that focuses on environmental science. The school has implemented several other projects as part of their curriculum. The new program will be at a higher level when compared with the previously implemented recycling programs.
