City Of Tampa to Celebrate Global Recycling Day

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of Tampa’s Department of Solid Waste & Environmental Program Management announced plans to celebrate the upcoming Global Recycling Day by launching a myth-busting campaign on recycling. It will also provide an opportunity for public to pay a visit to the Waste Management Recycling Plant in order to help them understand how recyclables are handled.

The City provides recycling services to more than 80,000 residences. It collects nearly 34 million pounds of recyclables every year. In January this year, the recyclable collection had hit a new monthly record of 3.7 million tons. The recycling has helped the city divert tons of materials from landfills and incinerators. In addition it has provided thousands of job opportunities.

Larry Washington, Director of Tampa’s Solid Waste Department urged increased participation by residents towards success of the program. By recycling right, residents can make a huge difference. He called upon residents to refer to the accepted items listed, before they are placed for recycling, as not all items marketed as recyclable are accepted locally, he added.

The recyclables collected by the city are sent to Waste Management facilities, where they are processed to be reused in new products manufacturing.
