SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of Tucson has partnered with Hefty to boost recycling of hard-to-recycle plastic items. This is an extension of the pilot project launched by the city’s Department of Environmental and General Services in 2022, aimed at promoting recycling of hard-to-recycle plastics and diverting waste from landfills.
The pilot project was implemented in partnership with ByFusion Global Inc. The project had collected plastics for recycling, thereby preventing them from ending up in landfills. The collected plastic waste were processed into usable building materials. However, the pilot ran into an issue when the collections exceeded ByFusion’s processing capacity. ByFusion’s monthly processing capacity was 10 tons, whereas the collections amounted to almost double of that.
The new partnership with Hefty will further boost collection of hard-to-recycle plastics. The residents can now purchase the Hefty ReNew orange bags at their local Walmart or Fry’s. They could also request online for a free Hefty ReNew starter kit.
The Hefty ReNew program targets waste that has not been traditionally been recycled, thus supplementing current recycling efforts. Meantime, the blue city recycling bins will continue to accept normally recycled items.
