Portland Rolls Out New Battery Recycling Program

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability announced that it has rolled out a new battery recycling program. The new program will allow residents to place their used batteries along with trash and recycling bins for curbside pickup. The new program will eliminate the need for residents to take batteries to dedicated drop-off locations.

The new program will cover residents living in a house, duplex, triplex or fourplex. Meantime, businesses and residents living in apartments still need to take the batteries to drop-off site.

The program will accept single-use lithium-ion, nickel-metal hydride, and nickel-cadmium alkaline and rechargeable batteries. The batteries must be placed inside 1-quart zip-zealed plastic bag and kept in the yellow glass recycling bin. No batteries should be placed in trash or mixed recycling bins.

However, electronic devices will not be accepted. Also, products containing non-removable batteries must be taken to drop-off sites. The alkaline batteries must be placed in the bag, but all other categories of batteries must be covered with clear tape at both ends. Also damaged batteries or batteries that could not fit into a 1-quart bag are not allowed.
