LRS Sustainability Report Outlines Ambitious Plan for Reducing Landfill Emissions


SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Based on statistics for 2023, LRS, an Illinois-based company, presented its first sustainability report.

The report indicates total baseline emissions of 288,829 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent. The business is developing a strategy to reduce emissions by implementing landfill gas capture programs and fleet decarbonization. It was reported that gasoline accounted for 25% of emissions while landfills accounted for 72%. It should be noted that LRS operates three landfills and has about 1,200 collection vehicles in its fleet.

An emissions reduction strategy was included in the LRS sustainability report, with a primary focus on absorbing landfill emissions, optimizing routes, and switching fleet equipment to "lower-carbon alternatives." It is important to mention that the corporation spent $7 million on control and collection systems for gas.

As per the study, LRS has recycled around 92,000 tons of cardboard, paper, and cartons throughout its various sites. 10,000 tons of plastic, 23,000 tons of glass, and 33,000 tons of metal have also been recycled.

The report describes the company's continued safety initiatives, which have resulted in a 15% decrease in the overall number of recordable incidents and a 26% decrease in the frequency of lost-time injuries over the course of the preceding year.
