Fort Wayne City Council Discusses GFL Recycling Contract

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): At a meeting, the Fort Wayne City Council talked about a ten-year contract with GFL Environmental for recycling processing. Since the collected recycling will be sent to the cutting-edge plant in Pontiac, Michigan, where it will be segregated more effectively, it is anticipated that the deal will greatly improve the contamination rates.

GFL plans to transport the tainted recycling to a landfill in close proximity to its Michigan operation. It should be mentioned that the Republic Services landfill on MacBeth Road currently receives the polluted recycling.

The estimated cost to the city of processing recyclables is greater than $1.4 million. On the other hand, it hopes to obtain eighty percent of the proceeds from the processed recycling that is marketed. In 2025, the projected revenue is approximately $600,000. Residents' solid waste rates will not increase due to the increased cost of processing recyclables, as this was previously factored in during the previous rate hike. The Council stated that an annual increase in processing costs is anticipated.

In order to educate communities and schools about the importance of recycling and its advantages, GFL plans to hire a full-time coordinator for promotion and education.
