Seattle Public Utilities Reaffirmed Commitment to Glass Recycling

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) and its recycling partners have reiterated their commitment to offer sustainable glass recycling solutions to its customers.

The announcement follows Ardagh Glass Packaging's previous announcement that it would permanently close its operation in Seattle. Glass recycling in Seattle and the surrounding area had become more difficult as a result of the facility's shutdown. SPU is reportedly in discussions with interested parties to find different approaches.

SPU encouraged all Seattle companies and citizens to keep adding glass containers and bottles to their recycling carts. To prevent contamination, all recyclables must be made sure to be empty, clean, and dry.

Despite regional obstacles, SPU pointed out that there is a strong national market for recycled glass. Additionally, it stated that regional partners are working to reestablish local recycling processes. For example, the Glass Recycling Roundtable, sponsored by King County and Seattle, brings together national and regional industry partners to find sustainable glass recycling solutions. Additionally, it is partnering with Strategic Materials Inc. (SMI), a local glass processor, and the Seattle Chamber of Commerce and Office of Economic Development.
