City of Grand Junction Council Members to Discuss About New Recycling Facility

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): A subcommittee consisting of three City of Grand Junction council members has been established to examine the construction of a new recycling plant, which is expected to cost at least $18 million. Dennis Simpson, Scott Beilfuss, and Anna Stout make up the subcommittee.

Five options are now being considered by the City. Expanding the existing site, which is nearing capacity, is the first step. Other options being considered include tipping at a different place, pursuing a new site and facility, not expanding at all, or using a combination of these.

The subcommittee has not yet made a decision. However, it is thought that after more than two hours of discussion, there is a broad agreement to examine the viability of a blended alternative, which permits processing to continue at the existing capacity while bringing in additional company.

Investing in a regional materials recovery facility (MRF) was suggested by a study done late last year; the projected total investment was $30 million. Additionally, it had suggested passing legislation requiring that all recyclables pass through the city's facility.
