Problems in recycling program on council agenda

BULLHEAD CITY - The Bullhead City Council will hold a joint work session with the Franchise License Commission this afternoon to talk about the city’s recycling program.

During a council work session in November, City Manager Toby Cotter said the program “might be worse than broken.”

Not only is it a concern that many residents can’t distinguish trash from recyclables but the program may no longer be financially viable. Bulk recycling materials used to be welcome but now companies collecting it charge haulers for leaving it — especially those in China, Cotter told the council last fall.

The public portion of the meeting begins at 3 p.m. After discussing the recycling program, the council members will go into executive session.

The first matter for the executive session will be a consultation with legal counsel about EPCOR’s interim water rate application with the Arizona Corporation Commission.

Then the council will spend time focusing on the annual evaluation of Cotter.

The City Council will start its regular meeting at 5:30 p.m.

Possible actions include approval of a final plat for Canyon Trails at Fox Creek, Tract 5190, Unit 4, as well as potentially amending an intergovernmental agreement between the city and the Bullhead City Pest Abatement District by extending it for two more years, ending in May 2021.

The Bullhead City Police Department is asking the council to approve the purchase of a 2019 Ford Interceptor for $33,264 and a full patrol unit upfit for $16,064. The vehicle would be bought from Peoria Ford, PFVT Motors, which was among the six contract bidders. The total cost would be $49,328.
