Tuscaloosa curbside recycling returns Monday

In a sign of life slowly returning to normal, the city of Tuscaloosa said that curbside recycling services would resume Monday.

The city’s 15 recycling drop-off sites also will return on Monday, city officials said via a social media announcement.

A map of drop-off sites can be found at tuscaloosa.com/recycle.

Mayor Walt Maddox ordered the halt of curbside recycling collection in early April as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

He attributed the action to employee safety and the need for additional workers to handle household garbage collection.

“I am making this decision to reduce the exposure to our public servants and ensure manpower needs for garbage routes,” Maddox said in March.

The weekly collection of household garbage from the curbside was never affected.

City officials said that continually collecting this waste was critical to maintaining a clean and sanitary community where viruses and disease cannot spread.

Households where the coronavirus has been confirmed, though, are still being asked to take additional precautions by double-bagging items before placing them in the cart and that any sharp items (needles, broken glass) be placed in a sealed, rigid container, such as an old coffee can or laundry detergent container.
