RecyclingMonster - The City of Omaha Public Works Department announced that recycling collection for Thursday, May 14, will be suspended due to impacts related to COVID-19.
The department is asking that all recyclable materials be held until the next scheduled collection date, May 21.
This suspension is for recycling only. Residents in the Friday service area will not be impacted and their recyclables will be collected.
A spokesperson for Waste Management Nebraska released a statement that reads, "As with every community in North America and with a larger workforce of 45,000 team members, COVID-19 unfortunately has affected our team members and their families. Out of respect for the impacted families and their privacy, we are not sharing any additional details.
Waste Management has always had safe work practices and personal protective equipment protocols in place. To further ensure the safety of our employees, we have created procedures to ensure social distancing (drivers do not enter the building but go directly to their vehicle) and the elimination of group meetings (i.e. employees not required to be on-site are working from home). In addition, we have implemented CDC recommended strategies including cleaning & disinfecting frequently touched surfaces regularly (including trucks), providing masks, and reminding employees to wash hand often by providing soap and water or hand sanitizer. Gloves are provided as part of our safe work practices.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) are not requiring any additional steps to handle trash, yard waste or recycling. Waste handling is not a disease pathway and has not been identified as needing any special precaution."
