BALTIMORE - Curbside recycling collection is being suspended in Baltimore for three weeks amid positive coronavirus cases at the Eastern Sanitation Yard.
The Baltimore City Department of Public Works is suspending all solid waste operations and activities at its Eastern Sanitation Yard after a significant number of coronavirus cases at the facility, which is closed. The facility had been closed to the public since March due to the coronavirus.
As a result, curbside recycling pickup is being suspended for three weeks in order to continue essential services following the closure of the Eastern Sanitation Yard at 6101 Bowleys Lane. The suspension of curbside recycling collections is effective immediately, DPW announced Tuesday.
"DPW is shutting down all operations at the Bowleys Lane Sanitation Facility out of an abundance of caution to protect our solid waste workforce. We are working closely with employees and their families to protect their health during this difficult time," Acting DPW Director Matthew Garbark said in a statement.
Residents on the east side of Baltimore might experience a delay in trash collections due to the closure of the Eastern Sanitation yard. The DPW said residents can expect all trash collection delays to be resolved no later than Saturday. Residents can call 311 to report any missed trash collections.
"We appreciate the residents' understanding as we mobilize and restructure to ensure that everyone's trash is collected and disposed of properly," Garbark said.
The Sisson Street Citizen Drop-Off Center at 2840 Sisson St. will reopen immediately for public use. In addition, the DPW is accepting bulk trash items at two locations: the Northwest Transfer Station at 5030 Reisterstown Road, Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., or the Quarantine Road Landfill at 6100 Quarantine Road. Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Residents can drop off their recycling at one of these three convenience centers.
