Garbage in recycling collection sites slows down trash collection process across the city

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) - An abundance of trash has begun to pile up at a recycling collection site behind the Kroger off Timberlake Road in Lynchburg.

Images of the collection of trash have begun to circulate on social media, showing an abundance of trash piled up near the recycling bins, frustrating some people who regularly recycle.

"If you misplace the things you are trying to recycle, either someone else or another process that takes more time and money will have to take care of resorting the materials," Craig Shaffer, a frequent recycler, said.

A representative of Lynchburg's waste management team said that whenever someone illegally dumps trash, city trash collectors have to come off of their assigned routes to clean the additional mess.

By taking trash collectors off of their regular routes, the trash collection process throughout the city is slowed down.

To help keep the location clean, an illegal dumping enforcement agent will now frequent the site more often.

Waste Management wants to remind citizens to continue to recycle properly.
