Ripon seeks to drop odd-even recycling center restrictions

The Ripon City Council would like to see the hours of operations changed at the recycling center.

Since its reopening, the Ripon Recycling Center has gone with an odd and even system, as in the last number of one's address.

"Can I suggest we cancel the (odd and even) restrictions and allow residents to go either on Tuesday or Thursday," Councilman Mike Restuccia said at the July 14 meeting.

Mayor Jake Parks agreed.

"That can be done," said City Administrator Kevin Werner.

The Ripon Recycling Facility located in the old Nestle parking lot on Industrial Avenue has been in partnership with American Recycling and in cooperation with the Ripon Unified School District.

Students at the local schools -- namely, Weston, Ripon, Ripona, Park View and Colony Oak elementary schools -- benefit from the recycling program with funds.

The recycling center was closed for several months during Phase 1 of the COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, resuming operations not too long ago on a limited basis.

Included were the hours of operations going from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Those with even numbered addresses could drop off their recycled items on Tuesdays while folks with odd numbered addresses are allowed there only on Thursdays.

The center is available exclusively to Ripon residents, with access being restricted to one vehicle at a time upon the request of the San Joaquin County Health Department.
