People dumping items at closed recycling center

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - The recycling center at Wesselman Woods has been closed since mid December, but people are still dumping items at their site.

The center is mostly run by volunteers, and the risk of high COVID numbers is the reason for the closure.

When the closure was announced in December, officials said they hoped to open again in the spring.

Officials told us Monday they have a new executive committee that will be meeting soon, along with the city, to discuss how to move forward.

They say there are some other options.

“We do have opportunities where you can drop off your recyclables. So January 9, this coming Saturday, we have our off site recycling event. That’s going to take place at the old Walmart west parking lot from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., and you can drop off your recyclables there. The only thing we do not take at that event is glass, styrofoam, and plastic bags. And this Saturday at this off site recycling event, Randy’s Tree Service is so graciously going to be there at 11 a.m. and will be mulching Christmas trees. So if you have a Christmas tree, bring it on over,” said Associate Executive Director at Wesselman Woods Zach Garcia.

Officials say those alternative drop off dates happen every month, and there’s no timeline for when recycling drop off at Wesselman Woods will continue.
