Johnstown offers recycling option for residents

JOHNSTOWN — The city is taking the Fulton County curbside recycling temporary shutdown situation into its own hands by putting a dumpster for city residents on Crescendoe Road.

Mayor Vern Jackson announced to the Common Council Tuesday night that residents can bring their recyclables to the Department of Public Works garage.

“We set up our old garbage truck,” the mayor said.

Jackson said city residents can dump recyclables there, but not regular garbage or plastic bags. He also urged residents not to confuse the city’s operation with nearby Evolution Recycling, a private firm.

Due to COVID-19 staffing issues, Fulton County has suspended curbside recycling pickup until at least Feb. 1.

According to the city website, residents can dump their recyclables at Crescendoe Road from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. Monday-Friday. A dumpster will remain at the garage until the county resumes curbside pickup, officials said. Residents also have the option of taking their recycling to the Fulton County Landfill on Mud Road, for which a permit is currently not required to drop off recycling.

In other business, Jackson extended a “thank you” to the DPW for keeping Johnstown streets clear and banks cut back this winter.

“They’ve really been working hard at it,” the mayor said.

Councilman-at-Large Craig Talarico commented that DPW is also using an “amazing” hot patch material to put fresh patches on holes in streets during the winter.

City officials also noted that if they see a street light out, the should contact National Grid through its website and not the city.

In a liaison report, Talarico said the Gloversville-Johnstown Wastewater Treatment Facility is still planning a tour in the “very near future” for local state and federal representatives.

Jackson announced that City Hall will be closed Feb. 15 for President’s Day.

The council’s next meeting, the mayor said, will be at 6 p.m. Feb. 16.
