QUINCY, Ill. (KHQA) — Quincy residents will be able to recycle glass in the city starting in April, after a vote Monday night by the City Council.
According to our news partners, WTAD, the Council voted to approve a three-year agreement with Ripple Glass of Kansas City, which will give residents the option to recycle glass.
"Ripple Glass is going to partner with County Market on 48th and Broadway. They have a drop-off container. Residents can drop-off their glass-recycling into that container and then Ripple Glass is going to come pick it up from us," said Mayor Kyle Moore.
The contract will cost the city 20 thousand dollars a year for the next three years.
The City's Fix or Flatten program got a boost after the Council approved accepting a $165 thousand grant from the Illinois Housing Development Authority's Strong Communities program.
The Council also approved a first reading of an ordinance that would spend $3 million from the city's reserve account. $1.4 million is from the state of Illinois's CURES program, and the rest is from unexpected revenue.
As part of the City's Sustainability Committee findings in 2019, the City makes an effort to keep no more or no less than 10/cent of its budget in reserves.
Half of the $3 million would be used to bolster the Police and Fire pension funds, while $500 thousand would be used to update the City's financial software. It's not been updated since 1997.
A final vote on the ordinance is expected in two weeks.
