Grade 301 is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel. It is non-magnetic when in the annealed condition, but becomes magnetic when cold worked. It contains lower chromium and nickel contents when matched with Type 304.
Stainless steel grade 301 is generally supplied in the form of strips and wires. They are available in several conditions or tempers.
This grade is known for its high strength and corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance offered by Type 301 is almost similar to that offered by 304, in mildly corrosive environments. Generally speaking, the corrosion resistance of grade 301 is a tad lower than grade 304, mainly due to its lower chromium content and higher carbon level. Further, it exhibits good oxidation resistance and could be subject to heat treatment and cold working. In addition, this grade is also suitable for all forms of standard welding techniques.
Grade 301 stainless steel is mainly used in the manufacture of aircraft components, rail car structural components, trailer components, kitchen equipment, vehicle wheel covers etc.
301 SS scrap are generally priced higher than 201 SS, but lower when compared with other popular grades such as 309 SS, 310 SS and 330 SS.

If not sorted, chances are quite high that the scrap yard may categorize the whole lot as general stainless steel scrap, which in turn may fetch only less money. Also check for any minimum weight requirement for deliveries to the scrap yard.
