19 things you should NOT put in your Nashville curbside recycling bins

Ophelia Paine has been an avid recycler for years - religiously putting her plastic bottles, cans and cardboard in her home's giant rolling recycle bin.

But as the chairman of a "creation care" sustainability committee at her church, she decided to participate in a Metro Public Works Recycling Right webinar to learn more about the process and about community recycling resources she could share with her fellow Christ Church Cathedral parishioners.

And, boy, was it an epiphany!

"I thought I was pretty well-informed about what could and could not go into the bins, bt I found I still had a few things to learn," Paine said. "I didn't know that I needed to put the caps on the water bottles. I didn't know that you you couldn't recycle shredded paper. I didn't know about the plastic yogurt containers.

"I learned a lot.The video was fabulous. It it showed the process and it brings home the reason they don't accept certain things. The plastic bottle caps get stuck. The shredded paper is just too small."

The free webinar provides a lot of information about recycling in Nashville.

"The biggest takeaway is when in doubt, throw it out," said Waste Reduction Program Specialist Jenn Harrman, who leads the Public Works webinar.
