The award will cover nearly half of the costs of the county's "Stop the Spark" program, which is being implemented in collaboration with Purdue Fort Wayne and will give its citizens free battery recycling containers for the following three years. Additionally, the grant funds will be utilized to inform and increase public awareness of the risks associated with incorrect lithium-ion battery disposal.

First responders and employees of hazardous waste facilities that deal directly with hazardous batteries will receive educational training, according to Stacie Hubbert, director of Allen County's Department of Environmental Management. It should be noted that end-of-life lithium ion batteries are linked to a number of concerns and hazards, such as fire, explosion, and radiation.

The award, which comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will go to seven counties in the United States, including Allen County.
