As part of the roll out, the residents will be provided with new recycling carts during the period from 12th to 23rd December. The 96-gallon cart will replace the existing green bin and will have capacity to hold more materials. This in turn will eliminate the need for multiple bins and multiple trips to the curb. They will have wheels for easy handling and attached lids so as to ensure that the recyclables are key dry and secure. There will be no additional costs for recycling cart or for using the new curbside service.
The change in recycling collection from weekly to bi-weekly service is expected to reduce collection costs as well as emissions. The recycling collection weeks are designated by the City as Red Week or Yellow Week.
The curbside recycling will accept cardboard and paper; aluminum and steel cans; plastic bottles, jars and jugs and glass bottles and jars. The items not accepted include plastic bags and wraps, bulky items, foam, batteries and electronics, scrap metal and hazardous waste, which could be disposed of at the Bay City Recycles Drop-Off Centre.
