Chestertown Environment Committee Ponders Curbside Recycling

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): Jenny Lee Freebery, chair of the Chestertown Enviromental Committee proposed plan to introduce curbside recycling before the Mayor David Foster and the Chestertown council.

According to Freebery, curbside recycling will offer recycling solutions to people with transportation issues. It would make recycling easier and boost recycling participation rates. She proposed to have a special truck, which will collect paper and cardboard in one section and cans and plastic in another. The paper and cardboard will be processed by CreaFill Fibers Corporation on Worton Road, whereas cans and plastic will be dropped at the Maryland Environmental Service in Ridgely.

As per the proposal, residents could be provided with either rolling recycling bins or non-wheeled ones. The easiness to handle rolling bins promises higher participation rates, though non-wheeled ones are less expensive.

Freebery suggested to launch the program on trial basis in one ward per town, which will provide hint of participation rates. The plan proposes to have trash pickups once in every week. She highlighted the need for educating residents on the new system. The system is essential as recyclable items are currently seen piling up in landfill, she noted.
