Church's recycling center reopens in Yakima

YAKIMA -- Yakima County's largest private recycling drop off center has officially gotten the okay to reopen. It was ordered to shut down in March, following the health district's stay at home order.

Wesley United Methodist Church's recycling center reopened just on Monday, after sending in a request to the health district, outlining their plan to keep both the volunteers and everyone dropping off their recyclables safe.

The church's pastor says most of their volunteers are over 70, so they're asking everyone wear a mask and maintain social distancing when they come by.

He says lots of people were anxious to drop off recycling that had been piling up since they closed.

"We're trying to be really intentional with this and so we submitted that in may , heard back from them last weekend and so we decided to open up this Monday and it has been nonstop since," say Pastor Shane Moore.

They're open Monday through Saturday 24-hours per day. They recycle cardboard, paperboard, paper, aluminum cans and tin cans.
