SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of Auburn revealed plans to restart curbside recycling services, which will initially be launched in the form of a pilot program. Based on the data provided by the pilot program, the city will make a final decision as to whether it should reinstate recycling pickup in full swing as before. It must be noted that the city had suspended bi-weekly recycling pickup earlier this year.
The pilot program, scheduled to restart in October, will launch weekly curbside recycling services in select urban and rural regions of the city. It would allow residents to drop off only certain stipulated items in the bin. Meantime, the drop-off facility at Auburn Public Works on Gracelawn Road will remain open for public. The staff would make a comparative study of recycling and contamination rates of both the systems after a few months. A final decision on full curbside recycling pickup, including whether to switch to covered bins for automated pickup, will be taken only after studying the results.
The residents who will be part of the pilot will be guided on what items can and what cannot be part of curbside collection. The city, in partnership with its recycling contractor Casella, would conduct campaigns to educate people on what goes into recycling and how to reduce contamination.
