SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): According to reports, the City of Boston is looking for fresh approaches to garbage management and recycling before the current contracts are set to expire in 2027. This will enable it make major strides toward long-term waste reduction objectives by putting in place more effective arrangements for upcoming contracts.
A request for information (RFI) was issued by the city's public works department, asking for suggestions on creative ideas from a range of sources, including companies, universities, consultants, and others. The RFI solicits suggestions, mostly regarding advances in collection and disposal. The interviews are underway, and the deadline for submissions is set for early March of the following year.
An estimated 250,000 tons of domestic garbage are produced annually in Boston. The goal of the 2019-finalized zero waste plan is to reach an 80% recycling rate by 2035. To achieve its waste reduction objectives, the City implemented a number of initiatives, including the curbside recycling program in 2022, which currently serves up to 24,000 homes.
The City has also ramped up textile and mattress collection. Between June and October, the city collected more than 19,400 mattresses.
