DELPHI, Ind. (WLFI) — A late-July fire at a Frankfort recycling plant is having impacts in surrounding communities. The City of Delphi has suspended its recycling services because there is now nowhere that will accept the materials.

The fire at Werner and Son happened on July 29. Mayor Shane Evans said Delphi has been able to continue its recycling services since then. However now, things need to temporarily change.

"We were informed late last week by Advanced Disposal, who we contract out for solid waste and recycling pickup, that they couldn't find a local place that could accept the recycling anymore," Evans said.

Curbside pickup will continue as usual for recycling toters, but those materials will not be recycled. Materials picked up curbside will be disposed at a landfill.

Evans said Delphi has used Werner and Son for its recycling services for a while. He said this suspension on services could last from six months to a year, but it's all dependant on Werner and Son. 

People who want to recycle materials can drop them off at the Carroll County Transfer Station, but the materials must be sorted. The address is 1295 N. 625 W. Delphi, IN 46923.

Mayor Evans said giving people the choice to drop off materials makes the most sense, but there were other options for the city to choose from.

"Spend $1,300 more a month to get it shipped to Kokomo, [but] that increases for extra hauling fees and tipping fees," said Evans. "We went with the second option. And then the third option was to do away with recycling completely, which some Indiana municipalities have done."

The transfer station accepts metal pots, pants, skillets, silverware, utensils, plastic water and soda bottles, plastic milk jugs, plastic detergent bottles, newspaper, cardboard, magazines, white paper, tin cans, aluminum cans, clear glass, and brown glass.
