SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of Mount Pleasant has approved appointment of a new trash hauler, effective 1st January, 2025.
The City Commission approved several changes to the City’s trash collection ordinance. Accordingly, it will replace the existing bag/tag system with automated curbside pickup. The City has entered into a five-year contract with Lansing-based Granger Waste Services, by a narrow 4-3 vote. The public hearing had witnessed strong protests from some residents, who raised serious concerns regarding the price structure of the new service, its environmental impact as well its accessibility.

Currently, the city runs a trash collection service, in which residents of single family homes, duplexes and triplexes could participate as and when they need, by purchasing approved trash bags or city tags. For those who wish to recycle items, blue recycling bins are also provided for a monthly fee.
As the new trash collection contract goes into effect, residents who make less use of trash fear that they would have to pay fixed costs. The residents are required to choose from either a 96-gallon or 65-gallon trash cart. In addition, they will have to pay for a 96-gallon recycling cart as well.
The costs for the smaller and larger trash carts will start at $8.78 and $9.76 per month respectively, whereas the recycling bins will be charged at $3.16 per month.
