SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of Pensacola’s recycling program will come to an end soon. The officials have already announced new trash pickup schedule. The residents will be provided with two trash pick-up days every week.
City Mayor D.C. Reeves stated that the city is working through various options on how to continue recycling, but the plans may not come into fruition at least until next year. The city was forced to end its recycling program, further to the recent decision by the Emerald Coast Utilities Authority (ECUA) to double the charges for taking recyclables to its processing facility.
ECUA had cited dip in commodity prices and rising contamination levels in residential recycling as the reasons behind the fee hike. The high level of contamination meant that ECUA had to take a good portion of materials to the county landfill.
According to the newly announced trash pickup schedule, Monday customers will have their garbage and yard waste collected on Mondays and garbage only on Tuesdays. Tuesday customers will have an additional garbage only collection available on Fridays. For Wednesday customers, Tuesdays will be only for garbage-only pickups, while Fridays will be for collection of both garbage and yard waste. The garbage only collection day for current Thursday customers will be Mondays.
