City of York Decided to Discontinue Curbside Recycling Services

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): The City of York announced its decision to put an end to curbside recycling services. The decision is being taken after thorough consideration of the program’s sustainability and financial feasibility.

The City has been facing several challenges in running the program over the past few years. Most importantly, rising processing costs have been a major hurdle in maintaining the program. In addition, the curbside recycling program has been witnessing dip in participation rate. The cost of running the program has elevated to such high levels, thus making it difficult for the city to maintain it in an economically viable manner.

Chris Wallace, Public Works Director noted that it has been a difficult decision to take and that it was taken after considering all possible alternatives. Although, it recognizes the important role played by recycling not only to residents, but also to the environment, it is left with no way in which it could continue offering the services by wisely managing taxpayer funds, he added.

The final curbside collection is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 27, 2024. The service will be terminated with effect from September 28, 2024.

The residents are urged to drop off their recyclables at recycling centers located at Cotton Belt, 2365 Black Highway (Highway 5) or Tirzah, 6190 Old York Road (Highway 161).
