CleanHub to expand environmental impact

Germany-based startup CleanHub, which provides a scalable solution to collect ocean-bound plastics, recently announced a commitment to expand its environmental impact at the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) 2024 annual meeting.

As part of the CGI community, CleanHub says it will expand its impact through the Coastal CleanHub Initiative, a three-year project designed to tackle plastic pollution and promote sustainable waste management in vulnerable coastal regions.

According to the company, the initiative aims to establish 10 new plastic collection hubs across India, Indonesia and the Philippines—regions where “mismanaged” plastic scrap is a leading cause of ocean pollution. Each hub will be equipped with CleanHub’s artificial intelligence- (AI-) powered tracking technology to ensure full transparency and accountability. The company says this system will provide digital verification for every kilogram of plastic collected to ensure responsible disposal.

By 2027, CleanHub says its initiative is expected to gather 50,000 tons of plastic scrap annually, while creating 500 jobs in coastal communities.

“The fight against ocean plastic pollution requires immediate, collective action,” CleanHub co-founder and co-CEO Joel Tasche says. “Becoming a commitment maker with CGI strengthens our ability to scale solutions where they’re needed most. Through the Coastal CleanHub Initiative, we aim not only to prevent plastic from entering our oceans but also to create sustainable, dignified livelihoods in regions hardest hit by the plastic crisis. We’re proud to join forces with CGI to drive real, measurable change.”

As part of CGI, CleanHub says it will try to secure additional financial resources and partnerships to support the Coastal CleanHub Initiative. The organization actively is engaging brands, philanthropic organizations and government entities to fund the creation and operation of its collection hubs.
