Cook to host Community Electronic Recycling Day on Saturday

Anyone who wants to get rid of an old computer, television, phone, gaming console, refrigerator, washer, dryer, microwave oven — even an electronic pipe organ — can drop it off free of charge Saturday during the Community Electronic Recycling Day.

After a year off, Cook Medical will conduct its annual electronic recycling event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 500 N. Profile Parkway on the west side at the former GE property now owned by Cook.

"We've hosted it in 2018 and 2019 and had every intention to do so in 2020," said Erin Kunkel, global manager of corporate social responsibility.

Kunkel helped out at both previous events. This year other Cook employees wi alongside Big Boy's Moving and RecycleForce, an Indianapolis nonprofit group that partners with Cook to provide the event.

Any electronic device that has an electrical cord to be plugged in can be dropped off during the event, Kunkel said. She expects three or four tractor-trailers will be needed to carry off all the electronics that get dropped off, especially after taking a year off.

"The first year we drastically underestimated how many (semis) we would need," she said. "This event is really focusing on the community."

Most businesses or events that accept outdated or broken electronics charge for dropping them off. This event is free of charge, and all the electronics will be disposed of in environmentally friendly ways.

"We absorb those costs to make sure it's acceptable to everyone," Kunkel said. "We want to make sure that everyone can participate."

Although the entrance to the Cook property will open at 9 a.m., Kunkel said people can queue up before that time along Profile Parkway. As 2 p.m. nears, workers will begin tagging vehicles to let the drivers know they may not be able to make it through the line in time, she said.
