TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - Rural Metro Fire Department crews have contained a fire that engulfed a recycling center on Tucson’s south side on Tuesday, April 19.
The fire at UCC Recycling, a paper recycling facility in the 5900 block of Belvedere Avenue, ignited Monday afternoon.
Crews said the fire started behind the building and quickly spread. Shortly before 4:30 p.m., Battalion Chief John Walka said the building had been engulfed in flames and several spot fires had started in the nearby brush. It is unknown how the fire started.
Walka said crews were hampered by large piles of paper, windy conditions and low water pressure in the area.
Crews were also working to protect several exposed buildings, trucks and fuel tanks nearby.
Large plumes of smoke could be seen from around the city. Rural Metro firefighters called Tucson Fire Department for help, while other nearby fire departments also stepped in to help.
No injuries from the fire were reported.
