Dare County to Reestablish Recycling Services Starting November 15, 2021

The Dare County Public Works Department has announced that several previously halted recycling services are scheduled to resume operation on Monday, November 15, 2021.

In May 2021, the Public Works Department was forced to shut down the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Recycling Center and to remove recycling trailers from recycling sites in Wanchese, Manns Harbor and Stumpy Point due to a staffing shortage.

Although this staffing shortage continues to be a critical issue for the Public Works Department, recycling activities in the above-mentioned areas are scheduled to be reestablished beginning on November 15, 2021.

The Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Recycling Center will reopen with some changes in effect in order to ensure recycling occurs at a pace that Public Works Department staff members can meet and maintain.

Only the following recyclable items will be collected at the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Recycling Center moving forward: clean cardboard and co-mixed recyclable items, including glass, plastic, steel cans, paper and aluminum cans. No electronic drop-off will be available, and no trash dumpsters will be provided.

Residents and visitors are asked to remain patient as the Public Works Department moves to reestablish recycling in these areas and to understand that, due to the ongoing staffing shortage, the department’s ability to provide these services may be limited at times.

If you visit a recycling site and there is no capacity for it to accept your recyclables at that time, please bring them back once the Public Works Department has had a chance to bring an empty trailer. Please do not leave bags of recyclables on the ground at any of these locations.

The Public Works Department also reminds the public that should any of these reopened recycling areas become dump sites due to noncompliance, the site could potentially be closed again indefinitely.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate these changes and continue our efforts to provide our community with these essential services. Your understanding is greatly appreciated.
