East Peoria halts recycling program for a year

RecyclingMonster - There will be no more recycling for East Peoria residents starting May 1, 2020.

Tuesday night, the City of East Peoria suspended its recycling program for a full year.

"The mayor came down and first asked for budget reductions. All the departments looked at reducing their budgets by 15% then 20%," said Rick Semonski, who's in charge of East Peoria's garbage, recycling, and streets.

The city's revenue is hurting because of COVID-19.

This suspension is expected to save them about $180,000.

"Right now all the cost have gone up pretty extreme and recycling is costing about $20 more a ton than regular garbage," explained Semonski.

The city is still trying to think of ways to help residents recycle during this time.

"We all want to contribute to the environment and improve our way of life," added Semonski.

There is nothing concrete yet.

There are places like A. Miller and Behr in downtown Peoria that accepts metals including tin and aluminum.
