Producer responsibility organisations in 16 countries across Europe have set out a manifesto over concerns including a declining volume of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs), criminal activity in the sector and additional dismantling obligations.
Together with industry partners, they are welcoming the general thrust of the proposed ELV directive which could come into force in 2025. By publishing their reservations, they say they are looking to benefit both the European recycling sector and the EU’s wider environmental goals.
Solutions
The manifesto consists of 20 ‘concerns’ jointly identified as problems for which practical solutions are put forward. It was presented to Aurel Ciobanu-Dordea, director of circular economy at the European Commission at the International Automotive Recycling Congress in Antwerp on 20 June. The handover took place on the stand of the Belgian PRO Febelauto.
Ciobanu-Dordea was shown a car on the stand covered with attendees’ opinions on the new ELV proposal. He used a key to open a discarded glove compartment to receive the manifesto.
