EPA Reached New Agreement to Accelerate Cleanup of West Lake Landfill

SEATTLE (Recycling Monster): According to reports, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and stakeholders have reached a new deal to expedite the cleaning of Missouri's West Lake Landfill.

Since its establishment in 1973, radiologically hazardous trash has been dumped on the approximately 200-acre landfill site. In 1990, the EPA highlighted the site's need for remediation by adding it to its Superfund list. Numerous legal battles have caused a delay in the cleanup procedure.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin was pressured to visit the site by Missouri Department of Natural Resources and Senator Josh Hawley. Thus, in March, Zeldin and Hawley went to the location together. Following the visit, Hawley stated that the cleanup of the site is the responsibility of the government. This announcement is regarded as a significant advancement in the issue.

The employment of a remedial action contractor was originally scheduled for July 2027, but is now anticipated by February 2027 in accordance with the revised cleanup plan. Instead of May 2029, September 2027 is the anticipated date for site preparation and mobilization. It is anticipated that the excavation would start in late 2027.

A consent decree is still being negotiated between the parties and the EPA.
