Firefighters responded in Avon Monday after a fire broke out in a local recycling facility.
The fire happened at the Waste Management recycling sorting facility at 40 Ledin Drive.
Speaking with reporters, fire Chief David Charest said crews responded near 8:30 a.m. and spotted smoke showing from the building.
Charest said the emergency response grew to three alarms. Two firefighters were ultimately taken to an area hospital for heat exhaustion and another firefighter was evaluated at the scene.
“We just knew that we had some type of working fire in the building,” Charest said. “This is a recycling plant. There’s a lot of different materials and they’re investigating the cause at this time.”
Charest in a statement later in the day said all workers in the recycling facility evacuated before firefighters arrived on scene.
After initially attacking the flames, Charest said, firefighters had to pull back after a portion of the roof began to collapse.
Charest said crews got the fire under control near 10:30 a.m.
Charest said authorities notified the state Department of Environmental Protection and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration after their response. Utility crews also responded to shut off power and gas to the building.
Though crews doused the fire, Charest said Avon’s building inspector ordered the building closed until a further evaluation can be conducted.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation Monday afternoon.
