Flint chooses a Grand Rapids manufacturer to make trash and recycling carts

The city of Flint announced that they have chosen Cascade Engineering out of Grand Rapids to produce nearly 70,000 new trash and recycling bins.

The company will manufacture 96-gallon trash and 64-gallon recycling carts that will be delivered to 30,000 households beginning this fall at no cost.

According to the city, the bins have many advantages, including making recycling and garbage service easier for residents, reducing litter, helping control rodent and pest populations and enhancing community cleanliness.

The city adds that they can help sustain or even lower collection costs over time relative to an un-carted program.

"We are able to grab everything in the most efficient manor," says Matt Allen, the director of public relations and government affairs with Priority Waste. "People are jumping on and off the truck. So what we found in other automated cities is that people like it because it is more accountable, it is cleaner as everything stays drier and we can get the job done faster, more efficiently and more cost effectively and safely."

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy is giving the city a $1 million grant to help pay for the carts.

Dow Chemical in Midland is donating 1.2 million pounds of plastic resin to help manufacture the carts.
