'Gansett Days' Recycling, Shredding Event To Be Held Sept. 18


NARRAGANSETT, RI — Just in time for fall cleaning, Narragansett is holding a community recycle day, this Saturday. Residents can shred old documents and properly dispose of electronics, clothing and more.

The "Gansett Days" recycling event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the North Lot of Narragansett Town Beach. Electronic waste will be collected, and up to three boxes of documents can be shredded, per person.

Big Brothers, Big Sisters will also be there to collect old clothing and textiles, while Exeter Scrap will collect metal. A full list of acceptable scrap metal is available on Narragansett's website.

 

Acceptable electronic waste

  • Computers, laptops, servers, routers, and peripherals such as mice, keyboards, plastic speakers, and microphones
  • TVs, monitors and flat screens. TVs must be whole and intact (No broken or exposed TV tubes)
  • Hard drives, optical drives, motherboards, daughter boards, ram, CD ROMs, power packs, etc. We do not re-market or reuse any data storage devices
  • Printers, fax machines, typewriters, scanners, toner cartridges, cameras, calculators, and small medical equipment
  • Cell phones (including battery), cordless phones, telephones, PDAs, iPods, tablets, and chargers
  • Batteries accepted include auto/marine, laptop, cell phone, lithium and battery backups.
  • All types of cables and wires
  • Audio/visual equipment, stereos, CD/DVD players, console gaming systems, cassette players, remote controls (no wooden cased items)
  • Small household appliances like toasters, microwaves (not glass plate), toaster ovens, blenders (not glass bowls), mixers, vacuum cleaners (remove dust bag) and power tools.

No household hazardous waste, paint or lightbulbs of any time will be accepted. Read more unacceptable items below. Any unacceptable items will be returned to the resident.

  • Lightbulbs of any type
  • Disposable or single-use batteries
  • Smoke or carbon monoxide detectors
  • Thermometers
  • Glass blender bowls or microwave plates
  • VCR tapes or floppy disks
  • Wood-cased stereo speakers
  • Furniture, including cushioned chairs or mattresses
  • Electric organs
  • Heating pads or blankets
  • Plastic bags
  • Cardboard
  • Rigid plastic bins
  • Styrofoam
  • Wood
  • Guns
  • Hazardous materials, including paint of chemicals
